MCP server

Markdrop for AI assistants

Publish what your AI writes as a link that renders, and read and update your documents from Claude, ChatGPT and more.

Server URL
https://api.markdrop.in/mcp

Paste it into your AI app, then sign in to Markdrop and approve. Free with a Markdrop account.

Set up

Connect your app

One URL, then a sign-in on Markdrop. Pick your app for the exact steps.

Claude

On claude.ai and in Claude Desktop.

  1. Open Settings → Connectors.

  2. Choose Add custom connector, name it Markdrop and paste the server URL.

    Server URL
    https://api.markdrop.in/mcp
  3. Choose Connect. Markdrop opens in your browser: sign in and approve.

  4. In a chat, ask Claude to publish something to Markdrop.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner may need to add the connector for the organisation first.

Tools

What it can do

Nineteen tools, each needing one of two permissions. Your assistant picks the right one from what you ask.

Publish and manage

documents:write
  • Publish a documentpublish_document

Turns markdown into a link that renders, diagrams and math included. Adds a password or an expiry when you ask.

  • Publish a page or filepublish_page

Publishes a complete HTML page, or a CSV, JSON, SVG or text file, as a link that opens rendered.

  • Update a documentupdate_document

Replaces the content of a document or text file you own. The link stays the same.

  • Change who can open itset_access

Makes a link private, password-protected or open to anyone with it, and sets when it expires.

  • Delete a documentdelete_document

Deletes a document or file you own. It's marked as destructive, so apps that honour that ask you first.

  • Upload or replace a big filecreate_upload

Starts an upload of up to 2 GB, new or in place of a file you own, and gives the assistant the exact commands to send it. The link stays the same on a replace.

  • Finish an uploadcomplete_upload

Checks the uploaded file against its fingerprint and publishes it. Nothing changes if it doesn't match.

  • Restore an earlier versionrestore_file_version

Puts an earlier version of a file back at the same link. The last five versions are kept.

Read and find

documents:read
  • List your documentslist_documents

Lists your documents and files, newest first, filtered by a search or by kind.

  • Read a documentget_document

Reads one of your documents, or one anyone with the link can open. It never gets past a password or private access.

  • See how it's readget_document_stats

Views and top referrers for a document you own, plus readers and read depth where Markdrop has them.

  • Ask how it's doingget_document_analytics

Where people drop off in a video, how far they read a document or PDF, where they came from and what's worth a look, for a document or file you own.

  • Search your documentssearch

Finds your own documents that match a query. ChatGPT's deep research uses it.

  • Fetch a search resultfetch

Opens the text of a search result, under the same rules as reading a document.

  • Check a fileget_file_info

Type, size, fingerprint, version and, for video, duration and resolution — so an assistant can confirm a replace took effect.

  • List a file's versionslist_file_versions

The kept versions of a file you own, newest first, with which one is live.

  • Follow an uploadget_upload_status

Whether an upload is still arriving, being checked, done or failed.

  • List your file shareslist_shares

Lists the peer-to-peer shares you started while signed in, once someone has opened the link: which are live, how many people are connected and how many downloads finished.

  • Check a share linkget_share_status

Says whether a markdrop.in/share link's sender is online and people can join. File details only for your own shares.

On your computer

Send, receive and publish files from your computer

Markdrop's peer-to-peer sharing sends files straight from your computer to the other person's, never through Markdrop's servers. So only an assistant running on your computer can send them, and the same goes for uploading a big file such as a 4K video: it reads it from disk and keeps the link when it replaces one.

  • In the cloud

claude.ai, the Claude apps on your phone, ChatGPT

Connected with the server URL above. They can list your shares and check whether a share link is live, but they never see the files on your computer.

    Toolslist_sharesget_share_status

  • On your computer

Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code

Add Markdrop's local server, which comes with the markdrop CLI. Your assistant can then send files and folders as a share link, download links people send you, and publish or replace files on Markdrop straight from disk.

Set up the local server

  1. Install the markdrop CLI, version 0.4.0 or later. Already have it? Check with markdrop --version, and see the CLI guide for apt, dnf and Scoop.

    macOS
    brew install himanshkukreja/tap/markdrop
    Linux and macOS
    curl -fsSL https://github.com/himanshkukreja/markdrop/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
    Windows (PowerShell)
    irm https://github.com/himanshkukreja/markdrop/releases/latest/download/install.ps1 | iex
  2. Add it to your AI app as markdrop-p2p. It runs on your computer while the app is open.

    Claude Code

    In your terminal.

    1. Add the server:

      Terminal
claude mcp add markdrop-p2p -- markdrop mcp
    2. Start Claude Code and run /mcp: markdrop-p2p shows as connected. There's nothing to sign in to.

Add --scope user to make it available in every project.

  3. Add your API token. Publishing and replacing files need it, and it links your shares to your account so they show up in list_shares. Sharing alone works without it. Create a token in Settings → API tokens and add it to the server's entry as MARKDROP_TOKEN:

    In the JSON config
    "env": { "MARKDROP_TOKEN": "mdk_your_token" }

In Claude Code, add -e MARKDROP_TOKEN=mdk_your_token before the --.

Tools on your computer

markdrop-p2p
  • Share filesshare_files

Shares files or folders from your computer as a markdrop.in/share link. Several files or a folder go as one zip.

  • Follow progressshare_status

Shows each share and download in this session: waiting, transferring or done, with progress.

  • Stop a sharestop_share

Ends a share. The link stops working and anyone still downloading is told.

  • Receive a sharereceive_share

Downloads a share link to Downloads/Markdrop, or a folder you name, without overwriting anything.

  • Publish a fileupload_file

Uploads a file from your computer — a 4K video up to 2 GB — and returns its markdrop.in link. Needs your API token.

  • Replace a file, same linkreplace_file

Swaps the file behind a link you own. Access, title and views stay; the old version is kept for restore.

  • List versionslist_file_versions

The kept versions of one of your files, newest first.

  • Restore a versionrestore_file_version

Puts an earlier version back at the same link.

  • Check a fileget_file_info

Size, fingerprint, version, duration and resolution, to confirm a replace took effect.

Before you share

  • Anything you share goes to whoever has the link. Send it only to people you mean to.
  • Your AI app asks you before each share, and the server refuses secret files such as SSH keys, cloud credentials and .env files.
  • A share stops when you close the AI app, or when you ask the assistant to stop it.

Try it

Things to ask

Say it the way you would to a colleague. These work once Markdrop is connected.

  • “Turn these meeting notes into a Markdrop doc and give me the link.”

    Usespublish_document

  • “Build an HTML dashboard of this CSV and publish it.”

    Usespublish_page

  • “Make my Q3 report private.”

    Useslist_documentsset_access

  • “How many people read my launch notes?”

    Useslist_documentsget_document_stats

  • “Is anyone downloading the files I shared?”

    Useslist_shares

  • “Is this share link still working? markdrop.in/share/4f9a2c71e0”

    Usesget_share_status

Permissions and privacy

You choose what it can do

When you connect an app, Markdrop shows exactly what it's asking for. These are the only two permissions.

  • See your documents and files

Titles, contents, links and view counts.

    documents:read
  • Publish and manage documents for you

Publish, update, change access to and delete documents and files.

    documents:write
  • You approve each app on Markdrop. The app gets its own token for this server, never your sign-in code.
  • Disconnect an app anytime in Settings → Connected apps. Its tokens are revoked at once.
  • Nothing is published unless the assistant calls a publish tool, and what it publishes is yours to edit, lock or delete.
  • New links open for anyone who has the link, like everything on Markdrop. Ask for private or a password and the assistant sets it.
  • Assistants can't read end-to-end encrypted documents. Markdrop stores ciphertext it has no key for, and the key never reaches the server.
  • Markdrop logs which tool ran, when, and whether it worked, for 90 days. Never what was in it.

FAQ

Questions

Do I need a Markdrop account?

Yes, a free one. The assistant publishes and reads as you, so it needs an account to act for. You can create one with just an email address when the app sends you to Markdrop.

Does it cost anything?

No. Connecting an app and using the tools is free.

Which AI apps work with it?

Any MCP app that connects to remote servers and signs in with OAuth: Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and others. The steps for each are above.

Why can't I find Developer mode in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT adds custom MCP servers through Developer mode, which needs a Pro, Team, Enterprise or Edu plan.

Is my data used to train AI models?

Markdrop doesn't train models and doesn't sell your data. What the assistant reads from Markdrop becomes part of your conversation with it, so your AI provider's own data policy applies to that conversation.

Can the assistant open other people's documents?

Only what you could open with the link yourself: your own documents, and documents anyone with the link can read. It never gets past a password, private access or a workspace's sign-in.

How do I disconnect an app?

Open Settings → Connected apps and choose Disconnect. The app loses access straight away; what it published stays yours, with the same links.
